Exploration of the natural and social worlds

The College of Arts and Sciences is located on UNE's scenic Biddeford Campus, where the waters of the Saco River flow into the Atlantic Ocean. Over the years, this confluence of natural resources has inspired students and faculty from around the world.

The liberal arts and sciences require an exploration of both the natural world and the social world, thus we believe in a broad-based mode of inquiry that fosters empathy and understanding. This pursuit of knowledge and caring for the world is at the center of the mission of the College of Arts and Sciences and is reflected in our Core Curriculum.

We are committed to preparing our students for meaningful and rewarding careers as well as life-long learning through an education incorporating scholarship, engagement, and service.

Our students discover an array of collaborative and interdisciplinary academic experiences built upon a solid foundation in the humanities, arts, and natural and social sciences. Each of our majors provides a vital balance between the breadth of a foundational education and the depth necessary for advanced knowledge in a chosen field.

We also believe deeply in undergraduate research, creative expression, internships, and study abroad as these experiences embody the ideal of a college education. All students in the College of Arts and Sciences will have access to such opportunities at the University of 51С»Æ³µ.

Mission

Our unique location on the southern Maine coast and the excellence of our faculty provide the setting for compelling undergraduate degree programs. Select graduate programs support advanced study through online and campus learning.

We pride ourselves on high quality teaching in classes that provide opportunities for frequent, personal student-faculty interactions. We set high standards for our students and ourselves and strive for excellence in teaching, research, scholarship, and service.

As a student of UNE's College of Arts and Sciences, you graduate as an intellectually engaged, globally aware, creative, and civically and environmentally responsible person who views the liberal arts as a gateway to lifelong inquiry, professional application, and learning.
