51Š”»Ę³µpolitical scientist quoted in āPortland Press Heraldā article about Mainersā votes in the presidential election

Brian Duff, Ph.D., associate professor and chair in the Department of Political Science, was interviewed for a September 25 article in the Portland Press Herald, titled āFor the first time, it looks like Maineās electoral votes will be split.ā
The article predicts that Maineās four electoral votes in the upcoming presidential election will be split between Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump, which would mark the first time in history that the stateās votes are divided. Clinton is leading in the southern 1st District, while Trump is favored in the northern 2nd District.
Duff theorized that the 2nd District support of Trump echoes that regionās support of Maine Governor Paul LePage ā another outspoken Republican. Duff said of LePage, āHe is one of the most unusual governors in the nation and now it seems they are going to really change their habits in voting in the presidential election and it tells you something is happening in politics that is really resonating up there. Itās reflecting what weāve noticed elsewhere, which is that white people without a college education, especially men, are really having a positive reaction to the Trump campaign.ā
